Matthew Susin is a lifelong public servant, educator, and community leader with more than two decades of experience in education, public policy, and civic engagement. Elected to the school board in 2016, he has put a focus on championing student safety, workforce development, and innovative education policies.

Matthew graduated from Florida State University earning a dual major in Political Science and History. While at FSU, he was inducted into the Political Science National Honors Society (Phi Sigma Alpha) and completed a legislative internship with the Florida House of Representatives. He began his professional career at Greenberg Traurig, serving as a Legislative Coordinator representing major national clients including Ford, Delta Air Lines, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Spirit Airlines.

Before joining the School Board, Matthew spent nearly a decade as an award-winning high school social studies teacher in Brevard County, teaching AP U.S. History, Cambridge AICE U.S. History, AVID, and Honors American History. His passion for students and public service earned him recognition at the local, state, and national levels, including the National Jefferson Award for Public Service, Walmart Teacher of the Year, the VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award (State and National Winner), and Brevard County Social Studies Teacher of the Year.

As a School Board member, Matthew has led and spearheaded several first-in-the-state and nationally recognized initiatives. He championed Florida’s first mandatory EKG/ECG screenings for student-athletes, resulting in thousands of students being tested and multiple life-threatening heart conditions identified and treated. He also led the effort to make CPR certification a graduation requirement, a policy that ultimately passed statewide.

Matthew has played a key role in workforce and economic development, serving as Chair of the Certified Production Technician (CPT) Program, which graduated more than 300 students a year for six years who were awarded college credit, and achieved an 87% job placement rate in advanced manufacturing. He also helped implement the largest high school student jobs program in Florida, a model now being adopted in major cities nationwide, where he served as a keynote speaker at the annual national conference in Washington, D.C.

Beyond education, Matthew was instrumental in the successful passage of the All American Flag Act, requiring U.S. flags displayed on government property to be made entirely in the United States. The bill marked the first passage of its kind in the nation and was signed into law by Florida Governor Scott at Viera High School where he taught.

He currently serves in numerous state and regional leadership roles, including Advocacy Chairman and Board Member of the Florida School Boards Association, Executive Board Member of the Space Coast Economic Development Council, and long-time leader within Rotary International. Through Rotary and other philanthropic efforts, he has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for causes including student hunger relief, youth leadership development, athletic safety, disaster relief, and international clean water initiatives.

Recognized as School Board Member of the Year for creating the largest student vocational rehabilitation jobs program in the United States. His work has earned him many recognitions, including Public Servant of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year, and Advocate of the Year, among many others.

At his core, Matthew Susin is driven to serve students and strengthen communities through his work in public policy, education, and action.
